First Inter-Professional Education Gathering At Welcome Week

At the University of Birmingham, during Welcome Week of 2017, The University hosted the First Inter-Professional Education Gathering for all students starting at the University studying a Healthcare course. This Gathering took part in two separate halves, however it was impressive to see a completely filled lecture of students from different healthcare courses talking to eachother, to give a glimpse of what the 2017 Healthcare Class will be as an Interprofessional Team in then future when they graduate.

The Gathering consisted of a evaluation via the Clickers with a series of questions about fears/ anxieties and what the cohort were looking forward to, and all answers had a resounding similarity, which helped to break through the invisible walls between different courses by acting as an ice-breaker to get people more involved in the conversation. Following on from this, people from different courses were called out from the audience to expand these answers into the microphone to share with the rest of the 2017 cohort. The gathering used the Clickers to show the proportion of different healthcare students who were in attendance, which helped introduce the different courses who each student would be working with.

All IPE Leads were in attendance, with representatives of each Course giving an introduction and a quick summary of what their Course was about, what IPE was, its importance and the key factors that are involved in working within an interdisciplinary team between healthcare courses. These points were further consolidated within a TV Hospital clip which the student Cohort were asked to comment on both their good actions and those which hindered the members acting as an interdisciplinary team, which acted as a great team-building exercise between students. The presentation also introduced The Inter-Professional Education Healthcare Team Challenge. (More details to Follow.)

Towards the end of the session, we were proud to have Healthbridge introduced to the 2017 Cohort and were followed by MedSoc talking about their Social Events Calendar for 2017-18 academic year and how to be involved.
